Looking after yourself as a parent carer

CT

CACIC Team··5 min read

When you spend your days supporting someone else, it is easy to put your own needs last. But you matter too, and small moments of care add up.

Notice the signs of burnout

Feeling constantly tired, short-tempered, or numb can be a sign that you are running on empty. Noticing it early, without judging yourself, is the first step.

Small things help

  • Take short breaks, even ten quiet minutes counts
  • Stay connected to people who understand
  • Accept help when it is offered, and ask when it is not

You do not have to do it alone

Talking to your GP, or to others who care for autistic loved ones, can lighten the load. If things feel overwhelming, please reach out, support is there for you too.

If you need to talk

You can contact your GP, or call the Samaritans free any time on 116 123. And you are always welcome to reach us at hello@chineseautism.org.uk.
