Talking to your child's school about autism

You know your child best. Teachers see them in a different setting. When you bring those two views together, your child gets the support that fits them.

Start with shared goals

You and your child's school want the same thing, for your child to feel safe, included, and able to learn. Naming that shared goal early sets a warm tone for everything that follows.

Share what you know

A short, practical note about your child can help staff respond with patience and care.

  • What helps your child feel calm and ready to learn
  • Signs that they may be overwhelmed
  • Sensory needs, routines, and the things they love

Find the right people

Ask to speak with the SENCO (the special educational needs coordinator). They can talk through adjustments, plans, and how you will stay in touch through the year.

Keep the conversation going

A quick check-in each term, rather than waiting for problems, keeps everyone working together and your child supported.
